Leakage and Sealing for Sanitary Pumps

It is a constant challenge for the entire pump industry to minimize leakage through the space between the pump casing and shaft. Almost in every application for pumps with rotating shafts, centrifugal pumps, for example, shaft seals are involved. A good shaft seal can form a barrier between the pumped medium and the atmosphere.

There are countless variants of shaft seals to meet every specific need. In this section we’ll focus on the mechanical shaft sealing.

A mechanical shaft seal basically consists of two parts: a stationary part and a rotary part. The highly polished faces of the rotating and stationary elements come into contact with each other to form a seal that prevents leakage along the shaft.
